Oct. 25 Blog

On Thursday a propane tanker flipped over and exploded on I-465, damaging a bridge. This accident caused massive traffic problems because I-465 was closed between I-70 and U.S. 31 on the northeast side. It was reopened and deemed safe just three days later.

What's more important here... alleviating the heavy traffic patterns that developed in other areas because of I-465 traffic being diverted or taking extra time and rebuilding / reinforcing the bridge to ensure it's safety? (due 11/1)

  1. I think that taking extra time to rebuild the bride is more important because it is essential to our safety. Even though there are heavy traffic patterns, it is more important to make sure that the bridge is safe because 1-465 cannot afford to have any more accidents like the propane tanker. More accidents would just cause even bigger traffic problems. Howeever, it is also important to find ways to help the traffic flow.

  2. I would difinitely say taking the time to make sure everything is fixed, rebuilt, and safe. I understand the frustration that comes with having to sit in traffic, but i would rather be late to first period then risk not making it to any period just to be on time. I think it should of taken a little longer than three days. But hey, maybe the construction workers were on it. However, I just feel that they should be one hundred percent sure that everything is A ok before they let hundreds to thousands of people drive over it.

  3. I believe we should alleviate the traffic. We need to let it in slowly however. The bridge may be weak, so if we rebuild little by little wile letting traffic through, we will not only get people to where they need to go, but we will also be able to reinforce the bridge as necessary. However, we will need to totally stop traffic at times in order to do certain types of rebuilding to assure the peoples' safety. This may be inconvenient to some, but we must think of the peoples' needs.

  4. I agree with Calvin. I think that if we let the traffic in slowly, the bridge will become safer. We should also completely stop the traffic sometimes to make sure that no one is getting hurt. This would greatly improve traffic situations and safety, even if it is inconvenient.

  5. I think we need to let traffic get back to the way it was in stages. If we just let it go back to normal all of a sudden, bad things could happen to the road and the people on the road. If we slowly allow others on the road I think traffic will get better and it will become safer for others who are on the roads.

  6. I don't agree with Taylor on the fact that we should rebuild the bridge. That would take too much time to do something that might not even be necessary. If we rebuilt the bridge even though it didnt need it, it would be a waste of human time and resources. Engineers have looked at the bridge and said it has been weakened but it still works and allows people to drive on it. I think we should just let people drive on it for certain times of the day for awhile to see if it truly is alright

  7. I think that building the bridge to secure it is necessary. Not to long ago a bridge in Minneapolis gave out and the death toll was horrendous.
I agree with Taylor in that we need to rebuild the bridge, it is essential to the smooth flow of traffic.
I disagree with Gavin, If we did not do this it would give out and their would be deaths, and backup for days. Reconstruct the to avoid future problems

  8. As a driver I believe that we need to alleviate the traffic. I-465 already is backed up during rush hour, as is all interstates. But with the traffic coming to a complete stop, you need to try and make the traffic go through more easily.
I fully agree with what Gavin said about Taylor. I believe that if we try to rebuild it, it will take too much time and cost too much money. People already complain bout the amount and the size of the pot holes. But no one wants to fund it. So by us rebuilding the ramp, we are wasting more money.
I disagree with Daniel. I believe that there will not be deaths because we did not fix it. There are always accidents because of the human error. You may be able to blame a death on the ramp, but most likely it was the drivers fault.

  9. I belive that taking the extra time to rebuild the bridge and make sure everything is safe is what needs to be done on I-465. I think this because the ran test on it and say it say its safe but you can never be one-hudered percent sure if its safe after something exploded near it. If we were to rebuild or completelly fix the bridge this will insure that human life will not be at rish drving over the bridge.

  10. I agree that with calvin that if we decided not to fix the bridge the least thing thing we could do is to regulate traffic on the brige to reduce problems. If we reduce the traffic on the bridge this will lessen the wait on it and reduce the channces of collapse Another thing is if we regulate traffic we can study the brige to see if there is and cracking or any other problems from the cars wait.

  11. I believe that taking extra time to make sure it is safe if the best alternative. Not doing anything about will only increase the chance of accidents. I know that taking the time to be safe would cause more controversy, but everyone knows that's the right thing to do.

  12. I agree with Taylor that they should rebuild the bridge. Although it may not be needed, it is the right thing to do so its safe. This will also make the traffic go more smoothly. By rebuilding the bridge, it takes all the risk out of it.

  13. I disagree with Taylor. If we dont get the people across the bridge quickly, then we people will be unable to provide for their families. We need to rebuild the bridge, but we nead to think about the people's jobs first. If we dont let them by, they may lose their jobs.

  14. I agree with Brandon. If we dont alleviate the traffic, people will begin to get angry and frustrated. People need to take the time and money to rebuild the road. This may even force us to sell it to the government. I think since it's their city, it should be their problem as well as ours.

  15. I believe taking the extra time to rebuild the bridge for our safety is the most important. We need to ensure that everyone can drive with safety. Keeping people alive and out of accicents is more important then peoples commute to work and so off. We can give up getting home fast to help ensure saftey. We cant have any more accidents such as the tanker because we could lose so many lives to that.

  16. I agree with Taylor. Its better to fix the problem now then to have further problems down the line. Because if something else happens after this that means that they will have to start over rebuilding it. So might as well take the time now to rebuild it then having to keep rebuilding it over and over agian. It just makes more sense that way. We need to think more logically about things.

  17. I think they should focus on decongesting traffic. The traffic would have become a nightmare. And the bridge was fine and didn't need to be reinforced.

  18. I agree with corey in this situation. They said the problem was not about the structure of the bridge, it was just about the asphalt that had melted. I think if we do not start figuring things out with the traffic then more accidents can happen because people will become frustrated and impatient and make stupid decisions to try and get out of traffic.

  19. I disagree with Eric. The bridge was fine and they should not spend all the time and money reinforcing a bridge that is stable.

  20. I disagree with Brendan because he thinks the bridge should be fixed. The fixing of the bridge would be a waste of time and money. The bridge is fine and does not need repaired.

  21. I think that we should take time to fix the bridge because if we dont and something else happens to the bridge it will take even more time and money. It also is in our best safety to fix the bridge. Especially since a lot pf people drive over it and under it everyday. Everyone could find a new way to places for a couple of months, its better than the bridge falling apart later on.

  22. I agree with Kylie. I think she has a very good opinion on the whole situation. It is a good idea to get the bridge fixed. That way we canb be a hundred percent sure everything will be okay.

I disagree with Corey. I think it is in our better good to fix the bridge before there is anymore problems. Yes traffic is a problem but if the bridge isnt fixed it could get worse and it would take more time and money to fix it.

  23. I agree with Genna, that taking the time to fix the bridge and making sure it is safe for drivers to drive on is nessesary. Checking the support system to ensure that the bridge can support cars everyday is the best thing we can do to ensure that the people who drive on it are safe

  24. I think that we should focus on fixing the bridge. If we don't fix the bridge properly, then we could have another incident, which would lead to heavier traffic. If people were too focused on fixing the traffic issue, then the bridge issue wouldn't be completely solved. In my opinion, I think it is in our best interest to fix one thing at a time and then go from there.

  25. I agree with Genna. I think that if we don't fix the current problem with the bridge, all that it will do is waste time and money. If we don't fix what is needed, we are just going to make bigger problems for the future. So, that is why we should focus on fixing the bridge so that we don't have this issue again. Although, it is important to alleviate the traffic, we should focus on fixing the bridge first.

  26. I think it is more important to rebuild and ensure safety. I'm sure that drivers would prefer being safe in the future to waiting in traffic now. The drivers throughout the city want to be safe obviously. The city needs to concentrate more on rebuilding to protect drivers and their passengers that are with them in a potentially dangerous situation if not handled properly.

  27. I agree with Molly and Genna, I think we need to concentrate on repairing the damages. It is important to make sure that everyone is safe. Drivers want to be positive that they can drive without worrying about if the construction is safe. They deserve a right to feel safe and not worry about things like that.

  28. I agree with Brennan that safety should be the first priority. The first accident was a terrible incident, and we certainly do not want to see something similar happen again that injures people. The city could face a huge problem in the future if they ignore the problem and there is a tragic accident. They should take care of the problem now so there are not more problems in the future.

  29. i think the traffic should be alleviated or close the road. then there would be time to rebuild. but i think the smart thing to do would be to rebuild and fortify it for the saftey of the people who drive the road. the last thing that the state needs is for something bad to happen on the roda and harm people and cost the state more money than necessary.
